Three vibrant new artworks reflecting Callington past and present have been added to the town’s Mural Trail.

Earlier this year, the project received a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and the much-loved ‘secret pasty factory’ mural was restored to its colourful best.

A competition was then launched to find local designers for three smaller-scale pieces to grace the blank wall of the Lloyds Pharmacy building in New Road, above Phil’s Paper Shop.

With support from the Callington Virtual Show, the entries came in thick and fast, and members of the Town Council were tasked with judging which of the A4 designs they wanted to see scaled up for the town centre.

Year 8 Callington Community College student George Law was among the three selected, with his piece depicting some of the town’s iconic places and buildings in an upbeat naïve art style.

Art teacher Annie Ramwell commented: “What a stunning design and completed painting. Well done George, it’s great that so many people will get to see it.”

Kit Hill also features in the piece by Erin Hilsden, who combined Cornish poetry and mining heritage in her winning artwork.

Meanwhile, Beth Boulton chose to reflect the Honey Fair’s important place in Callington’s culture with her honeycomb and bee design.
