New hospital in Liskeard by year 2002
Fears that Liskeard would not get its new hospital after a cash shortfall in the running costs of £187,000 were discovered, have been overcome by a joint effort of all the agencies involved.
It is now anticipated that the town's new hospital, which will serve people all over the Caradon area, will be a reality by September 2002. There has also been an assurance that there will be no reduction in the number of beds previously agreed.
This means that the new facilities will provide 52 beds, which are 33 for the elderly and 19 for G P medical beds. And after talks with the Plymouth Community Hospital Trust it has been decided to re-locate services from Mount Gould Hospital to Liskeard.
Chairman of Cornwall Healthcare Mrs Catherine Blight welcomed the announcement by saying 'This is good news for Liskeard'.
She said the joint working between the Health Authority, East Cornwall Primary Care Group, responsible for community services in Liskeard, Cornwall Healthcare Trust and Plymouth Community Healthcare Trust, has identified ways of closing the funding gap for the proposed new hospital.
