A NEW social football club is encouraging women to brush off their boots and have some fun.
The small sided group meets at the new Callywith College in Bodmin on Friday evenings.
It’s aimed at ‘older’ women in their 30s, 40’s and 50’s who want to ‘have a laugh, keep fit and make new friends’ says Lisa Benney, who started the group.
Lisa, from Lostwithiel, said: ‘I set the group up because there wasn’t really anything to cater for people in my age group who wanted to play non-league football.
‘I had played friendly football in Bristol for a number of years, and made enquiries before I moved, but was told that small sided football for women didn’t exist in Cornwall!’
The county’s Football Association have got right behind Lisa in her efforts and are supporting the first 10 sessions which will run into the new year. Women can come along and play in a supportive environment on the brand new, floodlit, 4G astro pitch at Callywith, which has easy access from the A38 and the A30.
‘The aim is for like-minded women to play healthily competitive small sided football, but to primarily have fun,’ said Lisa.
‘It will appeal to people who have previously played, but stopped for one reason or another and are keen to take it up again. It’s also aimed at women who don’t necessarily want to play 11 a-side league football. And it’s for people who may not have even played before, but who are reasonably fit and fancy giving it a go.’
So far the group has met twice, and already has players from Newquay, Liskeard and St Austell. Lisa hopes to have at least 10 regular members coming each week to make the club viable beyond the supported sessions.
