A WOMAN'S new car was left a write-off after it slammed into a nine-foot wall of straw which had fallen off its transport into the middle of the road.

The woman involved, Theresa Bassett, was travelling along the B3359 towards Lanreath on Monday in her new Seat Ibiza, which she bought on Saturday, when she turned a corner and slammed into a wall of straw which was lying in the middle of the road.

As the car hit the straw, both airbags were deployed, the windscreen shattered and the engine compartment was crushed, making the car a write-off.

Unbelievable

'It's unbelievable that I escaped with my life,' said Theresa, who was on her way to a firework display. 'Thank goodness my grandchildren and daughter made their own way to Trago Mills instead of travelling with me.'

At around 7pm, emergency services were called to attend the incident and Theresa was taken to hospital, where she was treated for her injuries. The bales of straw are thought to have fallen off a vehicle while being transported.

A police spokesman said: 'The officer who attended is doing an accident report, so the incident will be fully investigated.'
