A commemorative bench has been installed on land at the rear of Somerfield supermarket in Antony Road, Torpoint. The bench is at the top of the steps leading down to Albion Court where there are flats and sheltered housing for the elderly. Former mayors Alan Brimacombe and Julie Martin have been instrumental in making this possible, along with the store management. The bench has been placed in memory of Fred Flack, husband of Lilian Flack and father of Chris Rankin. In the latter part of his life, he often mentioned that there should have been somewhere to sit after climbing the steps, before continuing shopping. He was a Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy and a submariner. During the Second World War he was Coxswain on board HMS Sahib. He was mentioned in despatches and awarded a Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) for his involvement with survivors from a German submarine sunk by HMS Sahib, where he was responsible for keeping survivors alive. A plaque is displayed on the seat in his memory.
