THE creche at Lux Park Leisure Centre is set to close after Caradon councillors decided to cut its funding. The future of the facility was decided at a meeting of Caradon District Council's ruling cabinet this week after they decided that the service was not used enough. Doors at the creche are now set to close on April 5. 'No decision to cut services is ever taken lightly, but this is a case of the many paying for a service used by the few,' Caradon District Council's leader, councillor Hugh Francis, said. He explained the creches at Liskeard and Saltash were losing £32,818 a year. 'Use of the creches has dropped since the introduction of Government nursery vouchers, which means that many parents now use nurseries to provide childcare rather than leisure centre creches,' he said. 'During the first two weeks in March 2007, the Lux Park creche was used by only four children a day on average. 'The bottom line is that it costs council tax payers £9.61 every time a child uses the creche.' The decision ends a long-running campaign to keep the service in use. In May last year, the creche at Saltash leisure centre was shut but the Lux Park facility in Liskeard was given 18 months to prove its worth. However, numbers at the centre, which has recently had a £350,000 refit of its gym, were not enough to keep the scheme going. The council is now to look at whether the three part-time staff who work at the creche can be redeployed elsewhere in the council. The decision has angered Liskeard town and district cllr Tony Powell who called the decision short- sighted. 'There are many other areas of Caradon District Council that run at a loss,' he said. 'The decision by the cabinet is short sighted, discriminatory and against basic human rights. 'It's pandering to the views of the few and does nothing to make Lux Park a facility which is available to all Caradon residents especially to those who can't afford other facilities for children. 'If four people used the creche a day I would consider that a bonus because the parents may hold membership there or will be spending additional money in other facilities, particularly the restaurant.'
