A single poppy cross with the name, Eva, on it has left the organisers of a garden of remembrance baffled.
The cross was one of 280 carrying names that were lifted from Elliot Square in Torpoint, in the week after Remembrance Sunday.
The cross was addressed to a young gunner called Michael Picker, 23, who died on June 27, 1944, soon after the D-Day invasion of northern France by Allied forces.
Under the details of the young soldier is simply the name, Eva.
Six members of the Torpoint branch of the Royal British Legion made a four-day trip to war graves in Normandy, taking the crosses with them to lay at the headstones of the fallen soldiers.
Headstone
Joe Plant, from the branch, said: 'We want to be able to pass a photo of Michael's headstone to this woman and we would love her to get in touch so that we can do that.'
Michael is buried at the Ryes War Cemetery at Bazenville.
