A group of mums are doing it for themselves, getting involved in projects to improve facilities for children and families in Looe.

They have joined together and are campaigning to improve the area.

Founder of the Mums of Looe group Katrina Ring said: 'We feel that there is room for improvement in family-friendly facilities, especially as we are now set to lose the play area at Sunrising.

'Like other families, I have two small children and want to ensure that they are stimulated through play in a safe, welcoming environment.

'The mums are not expecting others to do the work for them, they are taking positive action, drawing up plans and seeking funding etc with the assistance of a whole range of individuals, organisations and bodies within the town.'

More than 40 mums are already taking an active role in the group.

Katrina said: 'As well as providing family-friendly activities, we want to ensure that the heritage and beautiful environment of Looe is protected and enhanced. We are the custodians of our beautiful town for our children.'

Councillor Edwina Hannaford has been helping the group and said: 'As a child, the only playground we had was the beach and the woods around the Millpool.

'I am so excited to be helping the Mums of Looe, they are an inspiration. I am so impressed by their passion and commitment to get things done.

'They are getting so much support from within the town – this demonstrates a real community spirit which I am pleased to be part of.'

Both the primary and community schools have offered their support and news of the initiative has even been picked up by mothers in Liskeard.

Although driven by the mums, local dads have been supportive of the group, helping draw up plans for some of the projects they have in mind, which will be revealed in the next few weeks.
