A series of mud rescues on beaches across the country has led the UK Coastguard to remind people to take care at the coast.
Andrew Jenkins, Maritime Operations Commander for UK Coastguard said: ’After the recent spate of bad weather when people have been stuck inside, it’s only natural they’d want to enjoy the welcome sunshine and head to the coast. We want people to enjoy themselves, and following a few simple safety tips will help them ensure their day out is one to remember rather than one they regret.
’Make sure you tell someone where you are going, what time you will be back and that you are dressed appropriately for this time of year. The best way you can ensure your safety and the safety of others is to avoid climbing on cliffs, mudflows or over rock falls. If you do become stuck in mud, try and spread your weight as much as possible, avoid moving and stay as calm as you can. Discourage others from attempting to rescue you, because without proper training and specialist equipment they could also become stuck. Ring ’999 and ask for the Coastguard.
’Luckily, those that have become stuck in recent weeks haven’t been seriously hurt, but it does go to show the dangers of mud and quicksand in the area. With better weather fast approaching, we’re urging people to take extra care.’
