LOCAL MP Colin Breed officially opened Torpoint's soft play gym, a brand new facility for mothers and carers of newborn to five year-olds to relax, meet others and play in a safe environment. Sally Tate, a Torpoint resident, had the idea in the summer of 1993 when as a mother, she discovered that there were no facilities for very young children. She wrote to the Town Council, and with the help of a small committee of dedicated mums, produced a business plan. Town Mayor Alan Brimacombe, also Secretary of the play gym, has helped the group secure funding for the venture, which aims to be a self-sufficient social enterprise. All of the funding came in place this year, with CHAT, the Rame and District Lions, Awards for All lottery scheme, and local health professionals donating substantial grants towards the cost of play equipment. The Play gym held it's first meeting on Monday, September 13, with pre-school children enjoying a variety of toys from big building blocks, a safe area for babies, ball pool, and a play area. The soft play gym not only gives children the chance to play in a stimulating environment, it also gives parents the chance to make friends over a cup of coffee, preventing individuals from being isolated in the community. Colin Breed, said: 'I am delighted to support this superb facility. The gym is perfect for allowing kids to have a really good play, and for parents and carers to chat, seek advice, and support. I understand there has been a great response to the gym since opening, and each week numbers are increasing. It is clear that the community needs this facility and I'm sure it will go from strength to strength.' The soft play gym takes place every Monday between 9.30am and 11.30am, and during the afternoon 12.30pm to 2.30pm, at Torpoint Council Chambers, York Road. There is the possibility of the soft play gym opening up for another day, but this is subject to interest.
