More police on the beat in Liskeard

There will be a greater presence of bobbies in Liskeard, following a shake-up which has meant the town is the main police force headquarters in District l.

Previously the HQ had been based at Launceston.

The new move was outlined to town councillors at their recent meeting by Chief Inspector Tony Cox. PC Steve Coombs accompanied the Inspector to the meeting in his role of liaison officer for the community.

It also means the public is likely to have a greater chance of reaching a member of their local police force, as the station now has a special community policing telephone number.

Inspector Cox detailed the overall strength at Liskeard police station as main base for Cornwall's District 1 in Cornwall, which conforms to Caradon boundaries. Crime prevention officer, Chris Pridham, has returned to Liskeard - but also based there will be 12 response officers plus three sergeants and a new CID team of three officers led by a detective sergeant.

A further unit to deal with crime reduction measures has also been established, plus a WPC to be a link with schools.

The Inspector said the reorganisation stemmed from government aims under crime and disorder legislation and means a 'substantial police increase at Liskeard' has taken place. He added the police area included all five towns of Caradon - the only drawback being that he himself will have some duties to perform in Restormel district.

He and PC Coombs took note of local problems raised by councillors. The community policing section has a direct phone line on Liskeard 325408 .
