AN artist exhibiting in Liskeard will be chatting to visitors about her work tomorrow (Saturday).

Emma Clare Bennett takes a contemporary look at the moorland landscape, with a particular focus on the common land and the former mining areas around Caradon Hill and Minions.

Wanting to steer far away from a literal depiction of views, Emma has immersed herself in the landscape to make abstract works, often using the soil and other materials gathered from the land to create the pieces.

The 27 year old artist, who is based near Looe, is currently studying for an MA and also lectures in Fine Art at Callywith College.

Emma recently ran a competition amongst her students, and the winner, 16 year old Esther Berry, gained the chance to be part of the exhibition. This was the first stage of a project Emma has embarked upon to give students of schools and colleges the opportunity to show their work in Cornish galleries.

‘The competition created an opportunity for students to understand audience and display approaches in their own practice,’ said Emma.

‘I would like to extend this to become an enterprise which helps schools to provide permanent access to exhibition spaces.’

Emma Bennett’s exhibition ‘Material Landscape’ will be at Stuart House in Liskeard tomorrow (9.30am - 12.30pm) with a talk from the artist at 11am.
