The first match saw Liskeard playing Clifton. Clifton were by far the more experienced side, passing the ball freely and supporting each other well. They scored three tries in the first half. Liskeard were not disheartened, Daniel Watt, Jan Spierings, Sam Meluish and John Burns putting in some excellent tackles to keep the score down. Josh Bryant, Stuart Grundy and Chris Bowden tried running forward with the ball but were prevented from scoring due to a good defence. Clifton scored a further five tries in the second half to win 40-0.
The second match against Penryn was also physical. Penryn were determined to beat Liskeard after defeat by Clifton. Although Penryn scored five tries in the first half Liskeard put in some good tackles to prevent further scores. The team was lifted when Liam Moran side-stepped two tackles and threw himself over the try line to score.
Penryn continued to play well and scoring four more tries they won 45-5. Man of the matches was given to one of the smaller players for his excellent and courageous tackling - John Burns - who played his best game yet.
An invitation was also offered to the super U-9s. Some of the less experienced lads in the squad were given the chance of a full match and from the off got straight down to the task and although losing the toss for the start Liskeard/Looe quickly gained possession scoring an excellent try by moving the ball out to the wing catching Penryn totally off guard. More tries came as Liskeard/Looe, although not playing as well as they can continued to pressurise Penryn with some determined tackling, in particular from Kennan Fowlie, although a lightweight got stuck in ably supported by Phil Trevelyan. At the end of the first half Liskeard/Looe had scored six times to Penryn's one.
The coaches asked for more of the same but Penryn started the second half with more determination and scored twice. Sam Goodman was given the task of tackling Penryn's scorer out of the game and to this end did an excellent job restricting Penryn to only one more try during the second half. Liskeard/Looe again applied the pressure and scored another four tries before the end of the match running out winners 50-20. A good result bringing their tally for the season seven wins from seven matches.
L/Looe supersquad remain unbeaten against Cornish sides for two seasons but will have to be at their best for their next two matches starting with Penzance away on Sunday and Launceston away the following Sunday.
