Millennium candle gift for householders
The candles are being organised by the Liskeard Churches Together group. During the summer members met informally in the hayloft at Culverland House to put together the candles, candleholders and instruction leaflets which had arrived separately. The delivery task has been broken down into 61 street groups with between 50-80 households in each, these matched to the electoral register.
The chairman of Liskeard churches Millen-nium steerage group, John Askham, said that they will provide 'a powerful symbol of light in the darkness'.
At the close of the autumn term specially designed porcelain beak-ers, bearing the Liskeard town emblem on one side and the Liskeard churches Millennium logo on the other, will be supplied, free of charge, by Liskeard town council to all pupils in the town's primary schools. They are currently available to church members at £4.95 each. Their sale will help fund the evangelistic mission 'Countdown' which is to be held in Liskeard school grounds from May 31 - June 2 2000, as is the sale of Millennium logo badges.
Youth games for 2000
Plans are afoot for the Millennium Youth Games next year, these to be based on the successful Cornwall Youth Games held in July at sites in Newquay and Bodmin this year.
The Millennium Youth Games are likely to comprise a series of regional events with the South West games held in Exeter in July next yea. The project would culminate with a national final in August 2000.
Restormel councillors have been told the games would consist of eight different sports with under 15 and under 13 age groups - with each district in Cornwall sending teams to the regional events. It was explained that up to 3,000 children from Devon and Cornwall would take part in the games in Exeter and the best Cornish teams in each sport would progress to the finals in Southampton.
The sports council would be funding the costs but funds have also been set aside by each district council to meet the transport costs of competitors.
