AFTER three decades working in the world of IT, Ken Bryce never expected his next career move would involve helping people overcome addiction and rebuild their lives.

But at the age of 63, the Millbrook man took a leap of faith and began volunteering with WithYou in Cornwall – a decision that has transformed his own life while making a difference to others across the county.

Ken had spent 30 years working in IT for an American software company before finding himself at a crossroads and looking for a new challenge. He wanted to use his time and experience to support others and began researching opportunities where he could make a positive impact.

“I started doing a lot of research online, and I was horrified to see how people could be stigmatised and marginalised because of issues with drugs and alcohol,” he said. “I knew I wanted to make a difference, so I started looking for volunteering opportunities, which is how I came across WithYou.”

After completing his initial training with Billy Horton, WithYou’s Community Engagement Co-ordinator, Ken quickly realised he had found something that mattered to him.

“I was completely sold. I was convinced this was something I really wanted to do,” he said.

He described the training as engaging and praised the people delivering it. From the outset, Ken felt welcomed by both the team and the people accessing support.

“I couldn’t believe the effect it had on me,” he said. “The team and the clients were so welcoming, and I felt that I belonged. This was what I was supposed to be doing.”

After completing his volunteer training, Ken quickly took on more responsibilities, supporting people across Cornwall by helping with appointments and recovery groups. He began driving clients to appointments, something he found particularly rewarding because it gave people the opportunity to talk and share their experiences.

Ken also started co-facilitating Mutual Aid Partnership groups in North East Cornwall, helping people in recovery support one another and share their journeys.

Through volunteering, Ken gained a greater understanding of the challenges people face when trying to overcome addiction and rebuild their lives. The experience inspired him to continue learning, and over the last year he has become a qualified counsellor and certified hypnotherapist.

Those extra skills have helped him develop his knowledge and confidence when supporting others. His dedication and commitment have now led to a new chapter, with Ken moving from volunteering into a full-time paid role as a recovery worker with WithYou.

Reflecting on his journey, Ken added: “I’ve gone from volunteering to paid employee in 12 months, and I have enjoyed every moment.”

Now, he hopes his story will encourage others to consider volunteering and discover the difference they can make in their community.

“I would recommend volunteering with WithYou to anybody who wants to help people,” he said.

WithYou is currently supported by 34 dedicated volunteers across Cornwall, who play an important role in helping people affected by drug and alcohol issues access support.
