A memorial service was held in St Stephen’s Churchyard, Saltash, to mark the 75th anniversary of the deaths of six Saltash firemen who were killed during the Plymouth Blitz. Barry Brooking, whose grandfather, Francis Brooking, was one of the six killed when their vehicle and water pump went over an unexploded bomb, organised the service. The men who died on April 22, 1941, were Francis Brooking, Stanley Crabb, Bernard Jasper, Alfred Crapp, John Stanlake and Leslie Tibbs. A Scout on fire duty, Donald Cummings, was killed a week later in the Saltash Blitz and is buried at Botus Fleming. The Rev Michael Goodland officiated at the service and Mr Brooking led a tribute. A lone piper, Stuart Hannaford, played a lament and two firefighters, Mike Parker and Paul Blaketon, laid a wreath watched by members of the Saltash Fire Brigade and fire cadets. Also attending were the Mayor of Saltash Bill Phillips, councillors and descendants of the firemen who were killed.
