Climate change protesters will be welcomed back to South East Cornwall today after a week of direct action in London.

Around 20 members of the local Extinction Rebellion (XR) movement were part of a larger group who held Waterloo Bridge last week, during peaceful civil disobedience that shut down roads across the capital.

Several members of the South East Cornwall group were among the more than 1,000 people arrested.

A meeting of South East Cornwall Extinction Rebellion will be held this evening (Tuesday April 23) at the Liskerrett Centre in Liskeard.

Activists who took part in the London demonstrations will share their experiences, and the meeting will also explore the next moves planned by XR in Cornwall, as well as setting out the focus of the national and global movement in the coming days and weeks.

XR has said that it aims to negotiate with London mayor Sadiq Khan and members of Parliament this week over its three demands: that the Government acknowledge the scale of the climate change problem; that a target is set for net zero carbon emissions by 2025; and that a People’s Assembly is established to oversee the changes needed to achieve this aim.
