Liskeard’s mayor and her husband are encouraging veterans and their families to make the most of the support services available.

Christina and Terry Whitty are regular attendees of the Vets Friday sessions at the Help for Heroes South West hub, the Endeavour Centre in Plymouth.

Here, says Christina, former military personnel and their relatives can use facilities such as the pool and gym, socialise with other families, and access support on a range of issues.

‘Terry joined the Navy when he was 15 and served for 27 years, reaching the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He was medically discharged in 1998,’ said Christina.

‘Because of his injuries, Terry qualifies to be a member of the Help for Heroes Band of Brothers, and is able to access the Endeavour Centre. We regularly meet up with other veterans and use the facilities, and we also join the outreach team when they have coffee mornings at various locations.’

At present, there are nine people from the Liskeard area who regularly use the Endeavour Centre, says Christina.

The Help for Heroes Band of Brothers and Sisters team is dedicated to providing a listening ear, as well as offering direct, practical support.

Other support services available for veterans include Forcesline, Combat Stress, Big White Wall, and the SPVA Veterans Welfare Service.
