Police investigating an assault which left a 49-year-old man in hospital with serious injuries say the attack was 'vicious and unprovoked'. They are seeking witnesses to the assault in the early hours of Sunday which resulted in the man suffering a fractured skull. A police spokesman said the sequence of events began at the Cornish Ivy pub, in Liskeard, where a group of girls were fighting. The fighting was followed by the 49-year-old being attacked by a man. The spokesperson said that after the victim left the pub, he was set upon again outside by two other men. He was headbutted by one man and fell to the floor where he was kicked in the head before being left unconscious and in need of medical attention, police said. The victim is now recovering in hospital with a fractured skull and a bleed on his brain as a result of the attacks. Det Con Karen Rothney, who is leading the investigation, said: 'At this time it would appear that it was a vicious and unprovoked attack on a man who was out with friends and family for the evening. 'The attack in the pub was then followed by a second attack by other linked offenders.' Police are appealing for anyone who was inside the Cornish Ivy that evening and might have witnessed any of the incidents. They also want anyone who may have been in the street outside and witnessed the second incident to contact them on 101. n A 22-year-old man from Liskeard has been arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm and has been bailed until September 22.
