A trip to Norfolk for a friend's wedding led to romance for a Looe man serving with the Royal Air Force more than 50 years ago. Today, Colin Clements and his wife Joyce are celebrating their golden wedding, thanks to that chance meeting. The couple, who live on the Sunrising Estate in Looe, plan to spend the day quietly with their family. They have a daughter and two grandchildren. Colin explained that, back in the 50s, he had been called up for National Service with the RAF and then signed on full-time, serving with the RAF Air Sea Rescue unit at Calshott, Hants. During that time, he was invited to a colleague's wedding in Norfolk, and it was there that he met Joyce, who was one of the bridesmaids. She had moved with her parents to Norfolk from Cumbria, and it was about a year after they met that Colin and Joyce married at Great Ryburgh near Fakenham on August 10, 1957. Eventually, Colin and Joyce returned to Looe and Colin worked as a shipwright at Devonport for many years, while Joyce worked in the canteen at Looe School for a time before going on to work at Tom Palfrey's store in the town. Colin was also a retained fireman in Looe, serving for a total of 31 years until his retirement in 1990; an exhibition of photographs compiled by him and showing the history of the Looe Fire Brigade is still on display at the fire station.
