Callington Town 2 Truro City 0

After six weeks of attempting to play this second-round match, it finally took place thanks to the hard work of the committee arranging the new venue

at the 3G Astro Turf pitch at Callington Community College.

The grass surface at Marshfield Parc had once again failed to recover, but the Cornwall County FA had given Town permission to switch the fixture.

Said Callington assistant manager Graeme Kirkup: 'It was going to be slightly unusual for both teams on the 3G pitch and, thankfully, we adapted very well, creating several chances in the first quarter-hour.

Ryan Lucassi had scored twice in the opening 16 minutes for Town, but that was the signal for Truro to take most of the plaudits from the rest of the contest.

Added: Kirkup: 'Truro dominated the whole of the second-half possession, but we limited them to just two good chances in the last 15 minutes.

'Our back four, plus the keeper, were outstanding and kept us in the game as Truro, after the first 20 minutes, played some fantastic football but were let down by their final ball.'

Despite feeling the effects of six weeks of enforced lay-offs, Callington held on to their two-goal haul to book a tasty-looking home clash with Premier Division Falmouth Town on January 22.

Town seemed to cope with the new venue the best, taking a second-minute lead when Chris Clarke's cross from the right was headed home by Lucassi.

And the same played doubled his tally on 16 minutes following good work from Clarke and Martyn Hake,

The second period saw a change in tactics by Truro – and that, combined with the sluggish Callington players, who were feeling the loss of match practice – led to the visitors taking most of the plaudits.

Fortunately City could not find their way past the Town defence, which was expertly marshalled by skipper Dan Jefferis, and when they did break through they found home keeper Tom Beman in sparkling form.

A 20-yard free-kick found Beman making a great finger-tip save and, from the corner, he repeated the dose to tip a 25-yard effort over the crossbar.

'Those saves won us the game as much as anything else,' concluded Kirkup.
