Award for student of the year

A LOOE fisherman has received an award as student of the year from the Fish Producers training trust fund.

Daniel Gummow collected his award from Jim Portus, chief executive of the South Western FPO. Jim said he was delighted to award the cup to Daniel as he has worked hard at his studies to one day become an inshore skipper. Daniel is currently working on the fishing boat Lucy Too under skipper Colin Matthews.

Daniel was presented with £100 and the Dawson Fisk Cup, an award named after an innovator of fish training in the South West. His widow, Jean, said she was delighted at the presentation of the cup.

Works for

more moorings

IN response to the increasing demand for moorings for pleasure craft in the Inner Harbour at Looe, Jim Rothwell, vice-chairman of Looe Harbour Commissioners, has proposed a number of works are carried out.

These take in cleaning and scraping the surface of the riverbed, and re-positioning (renewing where necessary) the mooring chains. This will enable new alignment of boats to allow easier berthing - and create extra moorings.

These proposals were agreed after consultation with the harbourmaster, and it is intended the work will be completed during the autumn/winter months when the majority of the moorings have been vacated.

To assist with this project boat-owners are asked to remove all mooring ropes and chains from the riverbed when vessels are taken away for winter storage.

Fish market says

no to produce

THE local produce market which hopes to start up in Looe soon as part of a Caradon District Council initiative, led by Martin Eddy, has found itself without a venue.

It had been hoped that the fish market would be used, but at the last meeting of the Harbour Commissioners, at which there were representatives of Looe Fisherman's Protection Association and Looe Fish Merchants it was decided the area would not be suitable. This was for health and safety reasons.

The Harbour Commissioners are presently helping Caradon by investigating other possible sites in the town which would be more suitable.
