Polperro's events
for the RNLI
MUCH flag selling and bucket rattling during the Polperro Lifeboat Week, produced the princely sum of £2,640. The Polperro Fishermen's Choir's atmospheric evening performance on the quay, and the equally impressive Torpoint Lady Singers who staged a concert on Big Green, attracted large audiences, who were most generous in their appreciation.
The summer fundraising activities began in July when a fish and chip supper combining a food and drink quiz was held in the Mariners Restaurant at Killigarth Manor. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Lenny Beard and staff the sum of £369 was raised. The West Cliff Court Gardens Open Days were also highly successful, with thanks to Jenny and Henry Hall, raising £519.
As a finale the Fowey Lifeboat was scheduled to enter port, but the arrival of the large Severn Class vessel was delayed by a mechanical problem. However, the intervening time was filled in by the Looe Inshore Lifeboat and crew who gave a demonstration of rescue techniques. The evening raised a further £386.
On Friday, September 28, the popular annual cheese and wine party will take place in the Ebenezer Art Gallery in the village. Tickets are available from Henry Hall on 01503 272213, and Archie Lund on 01503 272532, or on the door on the night.
Computers for the
community soon
ANYONE who finds the concept of using a computer totally confusing, or just wishes to know more about them, will be given a warm welcome to the new Looe Computer Centre which is scheduled to open during the first week of October.
Initially, the centre will have six computers for the use of the public, and the scheme has been funded, through the Town Forum, by the NOF (New Opportunities Fund) and the DFEE (UK Online), a new Government department created to promote computer awareness.
During the first week the centre will be open from Monday to Friday, to give the public plenty of time to have a look around and a chat, and after that it will be in operation on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 10am-4pm. There will be an annual £5 membership fee, entitling members to pay just £1.50 for each two hour session, and non-members will be asked to pay £2.
Managing the centre will be Martin Clark of Callington, who says the two main target groups are the over 60s and the unemployed, but all sectors of the community will be more than welcome to come along.
'We want as many people as possible to make use of the centre,' he says. Mr Clark says such headlines as 'computing for the terrified' or 'keeping up with the kids' would be descriptions of the sort of things on offer.
'We will basically be able to help, in a relaxed and friendly way, anyone who wants to know how to operate a computer from scratch, or to increase the knowledge they may already have,' he said.
The centre will temporarily run from an office in Fore Street, East Looe, based at Bartram Deakin Associates. Grant funding is now being sought from Objective One to enable the purchase of permanent premises elsewhere in the town, where disabled access will be provided.
Youngsters asked
to join the Leos
THE Looe Lions are holding a meeting on Tuesday, September 11, at the Island Bar, Hannafore Point Hotel, at 7.30pm, to gauge if some young people in the town are interested in forming a Leos Club.
Youth Officer Paul Bannister says the Leos are aimed at those aged between 15-22 years, with the emphasis on a fun social life and fundraising for worthy causes.
'Any community-minded young person is welcome to come along,' says Paul. 'We have already been meeting unofficially for a couple of months, but we need to make our numbers up to 15 before we can become an official Looe Leos Club.'

Jubilee medals idea
LOOE town council is expressing disappointment that so far no organisations have come forward to support their request for some financial assistance, regarding the purchase of medals for the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations next year.
The council is hoping to present each child under 16 in the parish, with a special commemorative medal, which will cost in the region of £5,000. Town clerk Colin Easterbrook says the council is hoping for some offers of help before the end of September, as a decision will soon have to be made and an order placed.
Cornish Fun Sail
DOZENS of boats of all shapes and sizes will be descending on Looe on Sunday, September 16, for the Cornish Fun Sail, which is being organised by the Looe Model Boat Club. The event will be staged on the Millpool in aid of the RNLI, and will be an entertaining attraction for visitors and locals alike.
Model boat clubs from all over the South West will be taking part. The event begins at 10am and will continue throughout the day.
New interest in
harbour election
THE Harbour Office has confirmed that the forthcoming election of Commissioners, due to take place on Thursday, October 11, has already generated some new interest. All nomination papers must reach the electoral officer at Caradon District Council, Liskeard, by noon on Friday, September 14.
Elections in the past have taken place every three years, but returning officer Jack Neal has drawn the attention of nominees to the Harbour Revision Order, which may in effect, shorten their term of office.
