CAPT Danny Matthews, of Looe, who has been awarded the Military Cross, will be given the honour by the Queen at Buckingham Palace on July 17.

He will be travelling to London with his mother, Rachael Reynolds-Smith, and his stepfather, Ken Reynolds.

Wind and tides led

to mixed week

THE fleet have had a mixed week, the windy weather on Friday and Saturday keeping a lot of the boats in and leading to a smaller than usual Monday market. Catches have been down

generally due to poor weather and strong tides.

Singing for

the lifeboats

PELYNT Male Voice Choir will be singing for the lifeboats at a concert in Riverside United Church, West Looe, on Tuesday next, July 10 at 8pm., when all proceeds will be donated to the RNLI.

Tickets at £2.50 are available on the door, from 7.30pm onwards.

Roof damaged

on scout hut

PC Hatt at Looe Police would like to hear from anyone who saw activity around the Scouts Hut in Downs Road over the weekend. The hut has been damaged with a 2ft hole in the roof, where the police think that possibly a child may have fallen through.

The damage was caused some time between 5pm on Saturday, June 30, and 5pm on Tuesday, July 3.

Diane joins

the set

THE young Badgers in at the Looe branch of St John Ambulance, have this week welcomed a new face to their set.

Diane Libby has taken over the leadership from Emma Pascoe and will now be with the Badgers each Tuesday when they meet between 6.15pm and 7.30pm at the brigade's headquarters on the Millpool.

The youngsters, aged between 6-10, presently number about 12 with room for more, and participate in the 'Badger Course in Absolutely Everything', gaining certificates and awards throughout their membership, such as hobbies, games, safety and first aid.

Divisional Supt Ann Tomkinson said the branch was delighted to have Diane on board. 'It is very important to keep the enthusiasm of our youngest members' she said.

Concert at

St Martins

IN concert at St Martin's Parish Church on Saturday, July 14, will be Torpoint's well known Kessenyan Singers. Admission on the door is £3 and £2.50 concessions, and the performance begins at 7.30pm.

Proceeds are for the church and Cornwall First Air Ambulance.

Fog signal

ready to blow

LOOE Harbour Commissioners report that the new fog signal and pier light currently being installed, is the most up to date model available, and has cost approximately £30,000. Contractors will be running tests over the next few weeks.

The nuisance level to local residents when the signal is in operation will be kept to a minimum by a 'directional emitter', but at the same time it will provide an all important signal to boat users.

Combined celebration

RURAL Dean and Rector of St Martin's with St Nicholas Parish, Looe, Rev Brian McQuillen, who has just marked the 25th anniversary of his ordination as a priest. Wearing a new 'stole' made specially for the occasion by his sister-in-law, Margaret McQuillen, he is with the Archdeacon of Cornwall, Ven Rodney Whiteman, who gave the sermon during a combined celebration service. It was attended by Rev McQuillen's own family, including wife Melva and their children, Jane and husband Simon, and Mark and Suzie, and also his parents, Donald and Dorothy. A large number of friends and members of his previous parishes were also in attendance. The service was followed by a lunch in the church hall. Rev McQuillen was ordained at Birmingham Cathedral in 1976.
