Local artists in
Quiberon show
TWO established Looe artists are to represent the town at an international art exhibition on the other side of the channel this month. The show of works by artists from across Europe is held annually in the town hall of Looe's twin town of Quiberon in Brittany.
Artists Matthew Taylor and Mervyn Beaver have been asked to take part in the exhibition in Brittany by the Looe/Quiberon Twinning Association. Chairman of the committee, Mr Richard See, said 'We are delighted that these two extremely talented artists, have agreed to show their work. In doing so they will promote the art and culture of Looe abroad'.
Matthew and Mervyn's work has been well received at recent exhibitions in London and Gloucester. Both artists live and paint in the town. Matthew is an accomplished portrait painter, and Mervyn, who has had a studio on West Looe Quay for three years, is well known for his oil and mixd media studies of Cornish scenes and motor racing.
Both artists are involved in community art projects in Looe, including the Fish Quay mural project and the proposed Wheal Hearn Gallery development. Also exhibiting with Matthew and Mervyn are St Cleer artist Eva Coomber and Looe pastel and computer based artist, Billy Dann.
Any local individual or business who may wish to help the Twinning committee and artists in the setting up of the show in any way is asked to contact Mervyn Beaver on 01503 265207 or Matthew Taylor on 01503 265606, or call at Merv's Studio.
Richard's red dress
helps the lights
THE auction at Polperro's Ship Inn on Saturday raised a grand total of £600 for the village Chistmas lights fund. The organising committee say it was an evening of fun and entertainment, helped along in no small measure by the humour of auctioneer John Marshall.
Mrs Berenice Pilcher says the committee is grateful to all who came and supported the event so generously. There are particular thanks to good sport, the lights chairman Robert Chisman, who raised £38 by modelling a red dress which no one wanted to buy. He agreed he would wear it for one day over this Bank Holiday weekend in his chemist's shop, if people paid £1 for him to do so.
