Plan for 12 homes
in Widegates debated
A PLAN to build 12 properties and estate roads at Widegates has been recommended for refusal by Caradon council officers.
The proposal, by P J and W I Harding, is for a site at Tremodrett, which has a history of previous applications.
The council has received letters of objection from neighbours who point out the lack of facilities in the village, inadequate water pressure, and the fact the site is not wholly within the village boundary.
The officers' report said planning policy does not normally permit the erection of more than one or two properties on sites within villages, and neither does the policy allowing development which straddles a village boundary.
But it adds that 'given that the boundaries for the site generally accord with the relevant part of the l99l approval, there is clearly a past commitment to the development of the site in some form. However, the scale of the development now proposed is clearly excessive for this village site.'
The report added: 'The council was previously minded to support the development of market and local needs housing, but the applicant did not want the local needs agreement and amended the application to market housing.
'The current application has not been submitted as local needs housing and the scale of the proposal is beyond that considered appropriate for this site.'
The recommendation for refusal cites the fact that the scale of the proposed development would result in 'environmental and servicing problems' and 'be harmful to the conservation of the village character and its landscape setting within an area of great landscape value.'
The matter was due to come before Caradon's planning control committee (west) last night (Thursday).

Flight Sergeant
in a documentary
A CORNISH Flight Sergeant, who is buried in Looe graveyard, features on a television documentary due to be broadcast on independent television this month.
Flight Sergeant Leonard Sweett will feature in a documentary entitled 'Hitler and Hess', produced by Sir David Frost and based on the book Double Standards.
The documentary centres on a flight by Hitler's deputy, Rudolph Hess, to Scotland in l941 and recent research which suggests that, while in Britain, Hess had a double.
For many years there has been a theory it was the double who was imprisoned following the Nuremberg Trials, while a mystery remains as to what happened to the real Hess.
The authors believed they found an answer while researching another mystery - the death of Prince George, Duke of Kent, in a plane crash in Scotland in l942.
It is thought perhaps the Duke, who died while on a 'special mission' was due to visit the real Hess. The authors found one body too many was recovered from the wreckage of the tragic flight, and traced its last movements to a house beside a remote loch where Hess had been kept.
Flight Lieutenant Sweett died along with the Duke, the mysterious extra passenger and all but one of the crew - the cream of the RAF.
