Getting away

from it all

THE Mothers Union is very busily arranging a warm welcome to Looe for some needy families who will be having an 'Away From It All' holiday at Looe Bay Caravan Park from April 30.

To reinforce the welcome they are hoping to place a box of 'goodies' in each caravan to help start the holiday off on the right foot. They would like to supply some food, and also lemonade, sweets and other treats for the children.

If anyone could spare something the Mothers Union would really appreciate it.

'These are families with young children who need our love and care,' says Mary Purdy.

If you would like to help, contact Mary or the Looe Anglican churches, to find out where you can leave your gifts or donations.

Merv and Matthew

at Cornish Week

CORNISH exile Ben Richards of Longlevens in Gloucester has contacted the Cornish Times to say how well two Looe artists did at a recent event he organised.

Ben, who is a frequent visitor to his home in Looe, says that Mervyn Beaver and Matthew Taylor aroused much interest with their work which was on display at an art exhibition, and were pleased to sell some pieces.

'They have done Looe a power of good,' he said.

The week-long exhibition, which attracted over 500 visitors, was part of a Cornish Week organised by Ben as a fundraiser for his church, St John's Northgate Methodist. It ended with a much enjoyed concert, when entertainment was provided by the Holman Climax Quartet from Camborne, with Narkurs' Maggie Holden the well-received soloist. The event ended with a traditional Cornish supper of pasties, splits and cream, enjoyed by 100.

Newlyn-born Ben was the Mayor of Gloucester in 1992/93, at the same time as Looe's present rector, the Rev Brian McQuillen, was the Sheriff's Chaplain.
