Food safety

course planned

BARBICAN pre-school in Looe has arranged for a food safety course to be held, but need eight more people to take part in it.

A total of 16 people need to sign up for the course, and so far eight have shown interest. The course itself will be free, but £7.50 would have to be paid for an examination at the end, for which certificates will be awarded.

The course would be held at the pre-school on a Saturday. Anyone interested in taking part should telephone 01503 262948 for further details.

Plenty of cod

on local stalls

WITH all the recent attention drawn to the dwindling stocks of cod, and the new quotas coming into force, local fishmongers want to assure their customers that they can still buy cod from them. Apparently, several customers are not even aware that cod is landed at Looe, but both the trawlers and netters catch them. Although they are not plentiful in numbers, there is always enough for the fresh Looe caught fish on local stalls.

There has been relief all round that fine weather has meant the fleet being able to go out for most of the week, except on Monday when there were gale force winds. Some excellent mackerel landings, but many are small.

Figures for week Friday February 9 - Thursday February 15 (weights in kilos). Mon - cuttle 180, squid 120, lemons 2,100, whiting 2,200, plaice 420, cod 220, haddock 120, red mullet 140; Tues no market; Weds - squid 70, cuttle 200, lemons 1700, plaice 320, cod 70, red mullet 100, flukes 160, scad 330, mackerel 23,000 (of which 14 tonnes were small); Thurs - squid 60, cuttle 70, lemons 1700, plaice 360, cod 100, flukes 800, pollack 323, mackerel 22,000.

Extension

allowed

AN appeal, following refusal by Caradon council of a plan for Penhale, Plaidy Park Road, East Looe, has been allowed.

The scheme was for an extension, and the government inspector concluded this would not have a significantly harmful effect on the scale and character of the existing bungalow or other nearby properties.

The event runs from 10am-12noon, and as well as being able to enjoy some delicious pancakes there will also be a variety of stalls including bric-a-brac, and cakes, plus a raffle. View from

the quay

IT was anticipated, subject to any objections being received by last Friday, February 9, that an amendment to an application by Polperro Harbour Trustees, already approved on April 24, 2000, for the re-building of the quay, would be passed by Caradon planning West, which met yesterday (Thursday).

Consent has now been sought to create a public viewing area on the flat roof area above the harbour quay.

Treble B plan

Caradon planning west was considering on Thursday evening (yesterday) an application from Weststar Holidays Ltd to relax conditions previously imposed, which would allow an increase in the number of static caravans at the Treble B Holiday Centre, Polperro Road, West Looe.

Planning officers are recommending approval subject to certain conditions.
