Ben and Sam are

sailors of the year

LOOE Sailing Club's finale to the millennium sailing season took place with the annual dinner and dance at the Hannfore Point Hotel, which was a great success.

Commodore Steve Sargent outlined the highlights of another successful season for the club, including the running of three championships over a two week period. He thanked all those who gave up their time both on and off the water, helping he said, to enhance the club's expanding reputation among visiting fleets. He said another feature of the year was the increased Redwing fleet making a splendid sight in Looe Bay.

The principle awards for the season were presented by Miss Claire Nicholls.

Winners were: Mirror fleet - John Crabb and Charlotte Brett; Enterprises - Steve Sargent and Sandi Turner; Lasers - Daniel Gummow; Redwings - Bud Coote and Dave Darlington.

The Eddie Walke Memorial Trophy for the junior sailor making the best achievement was awarded to Sam Haines and Geoff Godbolt was the recipient of the Bill Matty Trophy for the most improved helm.

During the evening the ballot took place for the 'Sailors' sailor of the year', with Ben Crabb and Sam Haines being the joint winners of the Glynis Gibson Trophy.

Fireworks night

was a dazzler

HUNDREDS turned out and crowded the seafront for the annual fireworks display organised by Liskeard/Looe Round Table on Friday night. Blessed by a respite in the recent bad weather, everyone enjoyed the dazzling show put on from the end of the Banjo Pier, and the large bonfire on the beach, organised by Councillor Colin Shore with the help of Don Webb, chair of ELTT. There were comments over the professionalism of the display, which was a colourful treat for all.

The Mayor, Ron Overd, started the proceedings by welcoming everyone and thanking the Round Table for their efforts. Chairman Chris Price thanked the main sponsors, Bradleys (sponsors in the community), with support also coming from Vospers of Liskeard, West Looe Town Trust and SECTA.

A collection was taken for Round Table charities who have recently given donations to the RNLI, disabled children, and £1,000 to help with the treatment of autistic Looe boy Alex Lane, who is on the Early Intervention Behaviour Programme.
