Revised proposal

for Millpool

AT a meeting of the Millpool Project Development Group held in the Council Chamber, East Looe, supporters were addressed by Chris Humphrey, South West Arts director of planning, from Exeter.

Welcomed by the chairman, Peter Bartram, Mr Humphrey spoke frankly about the various problems which beset all applications for capital funding. Earlier in the day he had attended a meeting in Truro concerned with Objective 1 and the criteria with which applicants have to comply.

He stressed the need for support from district and county councils but at the present time this did not imply financial assistance. He also said there was a lack of a suitable venue and modern facilities in this part of South East Cornwall compared with other districts.

Mr Humphrey agreed that the smaller building now being proposed by the group, because the library had indicated it could not afford to re-locate to the Millpool, meant that the less costly centre had a better chance of obtaining wider support and funding.

It was suggested that new applications could be made explaining the altered circumstances. Mr Humphrey was emphatic that the term 'regeneration' should be used and Julie Skentelbery agreed that this was most important.

In the light of the changed nature of proposals the meeting concluded that fresh approaches would now be made to obtain the necessary support from district and county councils.

Pasties and travel

for Christian Aid

SECRETARY of Looe and District Christian Aid, Mrs Monica Garbett, reports that fundraising has so far gone well this year with about £2,000 having been raised already.

The small but hardworking group are grateful to everyone who helps and supports various events, with special thanks to Riverside United Church and the Barbican Inn for providing the venues for their popular coffee mornings. Other events have included a cream tea and concerts by Pelynt Male Voice Choir, with the year's biggest fundraiser, the annual carols and mince pie evening at Pelynt Village Hall, yet to come on December 12. The year also includes the annual Christian Aid Week during May.

On Friday, October 6, it is hoped there will be a large attendance for a travel show to be presented by Mr Alan Skinner of Skinners Travel, Looe. Admission at £2.50 will include a pasty supper.

Christmas lights grant

AFTER a short break for the summer, the Polperro Christmas Lights committee are now back in harness and busy with the fundraising. The aim is to make the village not only full of seasonal cheer for residents, but also to give it a festive atmosphere which visitors can enjoy.

Committee chairman Robert Chisman reports that a grant of £500 from the Regional Development Fund (RDF) has been a good boost and Polperro WI are to present a cheque for the project on October 11.

'Everyone's hard work means we will be able to purchase some new lights,' said Robert, 'but we still need to continue with the fundraising.'

December 9 has been set as the date for the 'lighting up night'.
