Amenity Society's
tribute to John
AT the commencement of the summer 2000 annual general meeting of the Looe and District Amenity Society, chairman Peter Bartram paid tribute to the late John Simmonds MBE, who was president and had supported the Society since being a founder member in 1975. During the ensuing elections the position of president was left vacant.
Mr Roy Hogg gave the latest report on the obnoxious smells which had afflicted the Barbican area of the town. Although the matter is serious Roy's detailed account of Caradon's involvement and his own willingness to support the District Council should the matter have gone to court, was a most light hearted and amusing item. The meeting was assured that if the nuisance occurs again Caradon will take immediate action.
It was announced the 'Environmental Lecture' would take place at Looe Primary School on Wednesday, October 11 at 7.30pm. The speaker will be ornithologist Bob Stockhausen whose lecture will be illustrated. Admission will be free and all interested welcome to attend.
It was reported the 16 people in the Development Group of the Millpool Centre Project were experiencing slow progress. The Group was formally set up on February 5 following the unexpected decision by Caradon not to provide further financial support. A constitution has been formed and this plus an application for Charitable Status is being forwarded to the Charity Commission. There are several Amenity members among the Group but although the project was originally put forward by LADAS it was decided it was much too complex to be carried out by one small asssociation.
Elections were: Chairman Peter Bartram, vice chair Val Stokes, treasurer Charles Coad, secretaries Jean Grimer and Mary Shore, committee C Adams, Mr and Mrs Brown, D and J Fellick, G Gill, R Hogg, M Edwards, J Field, P King, E and A Moore, J and E Sweet, W Jeavons.
Magnificent sum
for the lifeboats
ARCHIE Lund of the Polperro RNLI fund raising branch reports that the magnificent sum of £2,267.92p was raised during 'Lifeboat Week 2000', which was a significant increase on last year's effort.
The annual Flag Day on July 27 raised £423.47p, house to house collections another £295 and the stirring performances on the quay by Polperro Fishermen's Choir and the Torpoint Ladies Choir also helped to swell the coffers considerably.
However, the most successful of all the activities was the souvenir stall which netted £981.48. It had been organised for about five years by the dedicated John and Rosemary Bristow before John's death, there being a lapse for the last two years. However, the committee have been delighted this year with the work of Cathy and Tony Eagles, relative newcomers to the village who are very keen to help.
The next Polperro event is a cheese and wine evening at the Ebenezer Gallery on Friday, September 29, courtesy of Jenny and Henry Hall. Tickets are available from 01503 272213/272532, or at the door, price £6. There will be a bazaar in Captain Nemo's (Nelson's Restaurant) thanks to unstinted support from Peter and Betty Nelson, on Thursday November 30. The final event of the year is the traditional autumn lunch, courtesy of Dave and Pam Foster of the Cottage Restaurant, date yet to be decided.
