Millennium ball a 'swell' party

'What a swell party' was the opinion of all who attended the Looe Millennium Ball, featuring the ever popular Kenny Ball and his Jazz Men, with support band Brooklyn, at the Killigarth Manor.

Organised by Looe Lions and the Town Forum, part of the event's proceeds were for the Looe Youth Action project. Lion President Murray Collings presented a cheque for £500 to delighted Mayor Dave Bryan, whose nominated charity is for the youth of the town.

More than 300 partied the night away, enjoying such hits from Kenny as 'Sukiyaki' and 'So Do I', with one of the showstoppers being Andy Cooper's unique vocal rendering of 'I Wanna Be Like You'.

The highly successful evening included a splendid buffet supplied and served by Killigarth staff.

Memorial trust to receive £600

The Harbour Lights Trust, set up in Polperro in memory of Daniel Kebble, to provide fishermen with safety equipment they could otherwise not afford, has been swelled by £600, thanks to his friends, the Crapp family.

They organised a bring and buy with raffle at Whitecross Village Hall on Saturday last, which was well supported.

The money will be presented at the Ferryman's Inn, Bodinnick, on Monday, March 27, at 8.30pm, and there to receive it will be Daniel's father Terry, trust treasurer Father William Braviner and Polperro Harbourmaster Chris Curtis.

Mr Curtis, one of the trust's administrators, has also received an anonyomous donation of £100 in cash, for which the Kebble family would like to express their heartfelt thanks.

They say donations are still coming in and they hope the trust will be able to help as many deserving fishermen as possible.

Gigs gearing up for race season

The milder weather has brought Looe Rowing Club's gigs - Ryder and Samphire - out of the sheds for the last three Sundays, with the crews practising for the fast approaching gig racing season.

The 15ft pair of paddles flashboat has also been out.

Prior to the world championships on the Scilly Isles on the May Bank Holiday weekend, the gigs will be competing at Saltash, Dartmouth and Truro.

On Sunday, in brilliant sunshine, lots of youngsters turned up and also enjoyed a get-together with barbecue on The Millpool, organised by club members Carole Bellamy and Jerry Gould.

The annual general meeting has also been held, the officers being: chairman Ian Tamlin, vice-chairman Dave Currah, secretary Bridgett Crabb, treasurer Caroline Bassett, and rowing secretary Caroline Bellamy.

New members both senior and junior are always welcome. Contact Ian Tamlin on 01503 262713

Millpool group to become a charity

There was a good attendance at the latest meeting of the Millpool Centre Project Development Group held at Luxstowe, Liskeard, when members, on the advice of Sid Gardner and Caradon officer Gerry Masters, agreed to send a letter to Caradon.

This would request that the site for the proposed centre at the Millpool, as outlined by consultants, should be reserved for a multi-purpose community centre to serve Looe and South East Cornwall.

Chairman Peter Bartram gave the welcome, and among the attendance were Derek Kitt, County Music Advisor, and Rita Hoile from Calstock Development Trust.

Rita presented choices to the group about the way forward to achieve success for their aim, and after much discussion, including input from members of the public, the steering group voted to apply for registration as a company limited by guarantee, for charitable status, and to form a working party to make the applications necessary.

This will meet on April 5 in Looe.

Members were pleased to be informed that Caradon officers, unable to make the Saturday meetings would be willing to try and attend an evening meeting if notified to offer advice and assistance.

There is to be a presentation by the plan consultants at Luxstowe on Saturday, April 15 at 11am.
