Business at Hannafore
On February 8, the Federation of Small Businesses (East Cornwall Branch) is holding an open meeting at the Hannafore Point Hotel, Marine Drive, West Looe.
The aim is to highlight the concerns of small businesses in the area and should prove to be a most interesting meeting with subjects to be discussed including, out of town shopping and its effects on communities and business, the fairness of the 'Brown Sign' system, planning procedures and how they serve the community interest and a personal view of the role of small businesses.
There will be a panel to answer questions from the floor including Colin Breed MP, Steve Vinson (Caradon District Council) a representative from the CDC.Planning Department and Cornwall Highways. We all share a common purpose to ensure that businesses in Cornwall are getting good service.
Therefore, input from the customers is vital so that a way forward can be established. This is your opportunity to make your point on issues that affect you.
There will also be the opportunity to Inter Trade with fellow attendees and to discuss common business issues allowing useful new contacts to be established. A very useful opportunity on its own.
Friends of Lanreath
Lanreath School held a coffee morning just prior to Christmas, which involved lots of work from cake bakers and, to the delight of everyone, the singing of the younger generation. The school would like to express thanks to all who came and those who helped and provided cakes and raffle pages. The morning made a profit of £53.37.
On Tuesday February 8 there will be a football match at the village hall field, Lanreath versus Polperro, with the new goal posts!
The posts were bought with money that the children had collected from a sponsored walk around the school playground.
The children are delighted with the posts and will enjoy using them in many years to come. Thanks to everyone that sponsored them.
Lanreath School will be holding an assembly at Lanreath Church on February 10 at 9.20am. All are welcome to come along.
The Friends of Lanreath also thank all those who have supported them throughout last year.
Conservatives meet candidate
So large was the turnout for the Looe Conservative Association AGM on Wednesday February 2, that the meeting at the Portbyhan Hotel has to be moved to a larger room.
The meeting was opened by Mr Roy Hogg, Chairman of the Looe Branch who outlined the previous year's activities where the association had exceeded its targets by just over 50%.
He went on to thank all members who had contributed so generously of their time and resources to achieve this excellent result, he especially thanked Cmdr and Mrs S Garbutt, Mr G Tilley and Mr and Mrs J Shearsmith. He then outlined the programme for the forthcoming year where fund raising and social activities have been planned to take place each month.
Mr Hogg then introduced Colonel Patrick Hall, Chairman of South East Cornwall Conservative Association, who addressed the meeting, expressing his and the Party's appreciation of all that Roy Hogg, his committee and members had achieved over the past 12 months.
He outlined the Party's successes both locally and nationally. Colonel Hall then introduced Mr Ashley Gray the prospective parliamentary candidate for the South East Cornwall constituency who had only a few days previously been selected.
Mr Gray introduced himself to those present and said that this was the first opportunity he had had since being selected to address local members. He outlined his considerable experience in local matters, especially in the fishing and farming communities .

New date for vows renewal
Rector of St Martin's Parish Church, Rev Brian McQuillen, would like to inform all those wishing to take part in the 'renewal of marriage vows service', set to take place near St Valentine's, on Saturday, February 12, that the event has had to be cancelled .
Rev McQuillen says the cancellation is purely on catering grounds and he will be holding the service, probably in the summer, when it can also be followed by a buffet/supper. He says he is delighted with the response to the service, the first of its type he has held at Looe, and hopes no one has been inconvenienced. He will announce the new date as soon as possible. The renewal of vows is for couples of all ages and also for people whose partners have died, but who would still like to re-affirm their commitment to them.
