For Blue Peter

The Cadets of the Looe branch of St John Ambulance held a successful sale for the Blue Peter Appeal on Saturday last at the Guildhall and raised £98.

They would like to thank everyone who contributed.

No deal over woods

Looe town council has been informed in a letter from Caradon that the parish of Lansallos no longer wishes to participate in negotiations regarding the parish boundaries.

It had been hoped that Lansallos would agree to transfer Kilminorth Woods back to Looe, where they once belonged under the old urban council, before Caradon took them over and they were added to the much larger neighbouring parish.

Jazz help

Tt is hoped a grant of £3,000 will come from PESCA to help with the organisation of Looe's first Jazz Festival, to take place on May 12, 13 and 14. Any profits from the venture are to be ploughed back into what is hoped will become a large and permanent fixture on Looe's summer calendar.

Looe Bay Holiday Park has offered to donate the accommodation needed for participating musicians and their families and the Admiral Boscarn, Hannafore Point Hotel and Harbour Moon are among local businesses to make pledges of financial help.

One of the organisers, Colin Cotton, has addressed both the Town Council and Town Forum requesting some financial assistance with the festival's shortfall of £1,800. The council is to refer the matter to its finance committee. The Forum offered £250 which was gratefully accepted.

A memorial seat

Looe councillors have agreed to a request from the family of the late Mrs Elaine York who want to erect a stone seat in her memory at Lower Marine Drive. In a letter to the town council Mr York said his late wife had loved the view out to sea.

Burden on tax payers

The Dog Warden scheme is to be retained in the town for the present, but at their environmental meeting town councillors expressed concern over the small fines imposed by magistrates on offenders allowing their animals to foul the highway.

They said it served as no deterrent, and Caradon Council, who brought the cases, had to pay costs for each one which was putting a further burden on council tax payers.

Town gets its own community constable

Police representative at the January meeting of Looe Town Council, Barry Mills, informed councillors that he had been appointed the new community liaision officer for Looe which would not involve covering Torpoint as well, which was last year's procedure. He said the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary had acknowledged that that system had not worked.

The officer said he would however be responsible for 9 other parishes, the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme and school visiting, but had lived and worked in the area for a long time so knew it well.

He reported there were a total of 351 recorded crimes in the town of Looe in 1999, a drop of 48 on the previous year, when the total was 399.

From December 15 to the present date he said 25 crimes had been reported. These included 4 thefts, 10 damages, only one of which was in the main street, 3 burglaries and one excess alcohol.

It was reported that New Year's Eve had gone off very well in the town with virtually no trouble, apart from a serious incident on the Sunrising Estate.

Mayor Dave Bryan praised the police for all their help and effort over the New Year period.
