Looe organisations heard the news that the town’s bathing waters are no longer classified as poor with delight, but pledged to keep up the pressure so that the town can improve the result.
In Looe poor water quality can follow periods of heavy rain in the river catchment area, which may cause agricultural and urban run-off.
The beach gained credit from the fact that the owner, East Looe Town Trust displayed daily water quality predictions at the beach throughout the bathing season to keep the public informed of possible problems.
There has been multi-million-pound work by South West Water, and a long running public campaign to improve what people put down the drains and sewers.
In spite of this SWW is still having to deal with blockages and spills caused by fats, cotton buds, and wet wipes. A new campaign will be launched during the winter, which will also see appeals to Liskeard residents and businesses.
Looe Mayor, Armand Toms said: ’This is good news for our local economy and safe bathing for all. But we need to keep at it or we could be knocked back next year, especially if it is a wet summer.’
