The Tidy Britain Group has given East Looe beach top marks in three out of seven categories in a survey of more than 150 resorts in Britain.
The beach is owned and maintained by East Looe Town Trust which is delighted with the results
Against the national trend where there was an eight per cent drop in the standards of facilities and amenities, Looe scored a remarkable 100 per cent for access, beach cleanliness, and maintenance. Looe was also above the national trend for dog control with 78 (76), and facilities and amenities 71 (56).
Trust chairman, Mr Don Webb, said the trustees and staff worked hard to keep the beach at a good standard for the local community and tourists alike, and he was very pleased with the excellent result.
He said the water safety test, referring to the quality of the water, was 44 per cent, 20 per cent below the national trend and 26 per cent below the average regional score, but that was already being attended to by South West Water, the Trust having convened the meeting to get the works in progress.
The Trust also had a low score of 41 per cent for information, but Mr Webb said that was a matter of personal preference as it had always been a policy not to let the seafront area become cluttered with too many signs which would spoil its appearance.
