Trewidland's Trevor Woodman has proved once more that Cornwall has a panache for producing top class formidable props for Rugby Union.
Tomorrow (Saturday), to the immense pride of his parents, Roger and Susan Woodman, and of his first ever club, Liskeard/Looe Junior RFC, 23 year old Trevor will don the England shirt to run out against Ireland in the first of the Six Nations games at Twickenham.
Coach Nigel Woodward included the Gloucester 23 year old loose head prop forward against the USA in the run up to the World Cup last year, and has proved his confidence in him by including him in his 26 strong squad for the tournament, and in the opening game's 22.
He will begin on the bench, but is the only prop replacement for both his counterpart, the unassailable Leonard (Harlequins) at No 1, and Cornwall's other son, the Bude hailing Phil Vickery, at tight head, and Trevor's team mate at Gloucester.
Trevor, a former pupil of Liskeard School and Community College, where he also joined the 6th Form, was first introduced to rugby by his father when he was 10, enrolling him with the successful Liskeard/Looe Junior RFC at mini level. At U15s he moved to Plymouth Albion and as a Colt joined Bath, playing for England Colts and the U21s. For the last three seasons he has played for Gloucester in Premier Division One.
Loose head props run in the family. Dad Roger played as one for Liskeard/Looe until he was 40, and Trevor's elder brother, 27 year old Nicholas, currently plays for St Austell, making it a Woodman hat trick.
Roger says that Trevor, who also enjoys golf, has always been a sportsman through and through, something he probably picked up from his late grandfather William Woodman. 'We are just so pleased for him' he said, 'the whole family is over the moon'.
