This week’s Cornish Times comes out as a month of lockdown restrictions lift today. We lead with the Liskeard publican who says that Cornwall going into Tier One has literally been a lifesaver for his pub. He’d originally planned to stay closed until Easter and now he says both he, his suppliers and the regulars that love the pub and its music will be able to have a good Christmas so long as everyone is sensible. His relief is echoed by other hospitality businesses in South East Cornwall. But not everyone feels comfortable about reopening to the public, and we hear from a landlord who’s decided not to open this week.

Chair of the South East Cornwall Tourism Association Sue Jewell describes the situation for accommodation providers at the moment. She’s praised holiday let owners and hoteliers for their efforts in operating safely. But taking bookings from people in different tier areas, and deciding whether to make cancellations, will continue to be a very tricky call.

In the Cornish Times this week you can also read a powerful piece from a local woman who describes how after contracting the virus in March and becoming very poorly, she is now still suffering from the long-term effects of “long Covid”.

Also inside the paper – It’s December and it’s starting to feel more and more Christmassy! There’s photos and a report from Liskeard’s lighting up on Saturday, where you can hear from the care workers who did the switch on. And find out how volunteers in Callington made short work of shifting a 30 foot tree from a front garden and into the town square ready for the town’s lights up which is happening this weekend.

There’s lots going on this week as advent unfolds – and you can read about an outdoor art gallery involving 200 houses in Saltash and Looe’s plans to bring festive cheer to everyone in the town at home, seeing as people can’t come down to the harbour to see the lights go on.

In Liskeard, the Wesley Church have made a Christmas film starring lots of local people – and find out where and when you can visit a tree festival in your area.

We love the good news vibe going on in this week’s paper and continuing that is a piece from St Dominick in the Tamar Valley – find out how the village has turned a shipping container into a new community shop.

This week’s Cornish Times carries our monthly Farming special. There’s a lot of change ahead for those working in the agricultural sector as we leave the EU Common Agricultural Policy – and we describe the Government’s plans for transition and the reaction to it.

In Sport, read Dave Potham’s look-ahead to the local football season resuming on Saturday – and find out how former Argyle first team manager Rhys Sullivan is helping usher in a new era of calm for the women’s development squad. There’s more news from Argyle in the section this week as well as Rugby Union, Point to Point, and on the back page, editor Nigel Walrond’s interview with Millbrook manager Mackenzie Brown ahead of this weekend’s game against Sherbourne.

Look out for our Open for Business section, packed with useful advice, info and stories on everything from how Tik Tok videos are helping care home residents stay connected to how to add colour into your garden this winter!
