Allowances are agreed

After months of negotiation the 1999/2000 scales of allowances for district councillors in the country have been agreed - and endorsed by the DETR.

Travel by public transport is specified by the most economic fare, while car allowances can be charged from 32.5p per mile for vehicles not exceeding 999cc with a 36.3p rate coming into play for a 1199cc capacity. Vehicles above 2000cc can gain 44.8p a mile. Motorcycle rates go from 150cc - 7.8p per mile to a peak above 500cc of 15.2p per mile.

Subsistent allowances, measured against absences from members' residences allows for breakfast allowance of £4.77; lunch £6.57; tea £2.59 and dinner £8.13. These are linked to a one day's absence - but an overnight stay brings an allowance of £77.43 and, if in London, £88.31.
