Good start to show

The Royal Cornwall Show got off to a good start yesterday, Thursday, with crowds flocking through the gates to enjoy the first day of the last show of the century. The day was overcast and rather dull, but it didn't rain and organisers were cheered by the forecast of sunshine to come for the final two days.

Princess Alexandra attended the show on the first day, her third visit to the Wadebridge site. The Duke of Westminster is due to attend today, Friday.

£2,000 robbery

Thieves stole £2,000 worth of equipment after breaking into a home at Old Ferry Road, Saltash.

They took a video recorder and a personal computer between 11pm on Tuesday night and 6am Wednesday morning,

PC Ray Pullen, of Saltash police, said that the thieves got into the property while the occupants were asleep, without causing any damage.

Wave off Looe Lorry

After about five weeks of frantic fundraising, the Looe Lorry bound for Albania laden with aid for Kosovan refugees, leaves the town tomorrow (Saturday) at about 12 noon. The mayor and mayoress, Dave and Annette Bryan, want as many people as possible to crowd on to the bridge to cheer it on its way. It is the largest single aid lorry to leave Cornwall so far.

Up until about 8pm this evening (Friday), tinned foods (no pork or fruit) and pasta, together with detergents to help combat disease in the heat, is still being accepted at Polvellan House.

Daylight robbery

Liskeard police are appealing for information about a burglary which took place in the daytime at St Cleer on Friday, when some expensive golfing equipment was taken from the porch of a house in Symons Row.

They want anyone who saw a person or persons walking through the village carrying, or loading a vehicle, with golfing gear, to contact them as soon as possible. They would also like to hear from people if they are offered golf equipment at a cheap price.

The missing items are Calloway Golf Equipment which includes clubs, a bag and other items. Also included are black and gold waterproofs with the name St Mellion embroidered on them.

Waste plan dumped

The county council has decided, that following objections by Caradon to a proposed waste transfer station being established on Trevol Business Park, Torpoint, that the scheme will not proceed.

The county waste authority will continue to seek an alternative land site in Caradon, but will review South East Cornwall's current and long term needs.
