David Wetherill became the Men's Senior champion in the British Table Tennis Association for the Disabled National Championships at Grantham. The 17-year-old, from Torpoint, had some fantastic wins to get to the final, beating his rival and number one seed Paul Karabardack, from Wales, in the semi-final, who is higher in the World rankings. David said: 'I will always remember it as the best I have ever played. I wasn't expected to win, but it has done a lot for my confidence.' David, who plays at Class Six level, went on to beat Andrew Calloway 3-1 in the open final and lift the trophy at his first attempt in the senior competition. He also won a silver medal in the doubles with his partner Will Bayley from Tunbridge Wells. Earlier in the month, David represented Great Britain in the Slovenian Open and won a gold medal in the Class Six team event. He is currently ranked 14th in the world and is working towards a place at the 2008 Paralympic Games in China.
