A family have now returned to Liskeard from Malawi in Southern Africa where they were amongst other volunteers helping out at a clinic in one of the world's poorest nations. Mike and Lynn Critchley and their 21-year-old daughter Lara, a nursing student, joined others at the St Andrews clinic in a village called Mtunthama. Although publisher Mike could manage only a fortnight in Africa, his wife and daughter spent six weeks there on tasks such as teaching English and folding bandages. The clinic was built through the efforts of Plymouth couple Mac and Dot Forsyth who now maintain it through a charity Medic Malawi. The Critchleys were particularly impressed by the tireless work of Malawian vicar Frank Dzantenge - Fearless Frank to his friends - who is responsible for 35 churches in the area. He ministers in a country of mostly mud hut villages without electricity, water, or sewerage, where the annual health budget per person is 55p. Said Mike: 'It was humbling just to have gone and seen. It has to be worth crossing half the world to see faith in action.' Medic Malawi can be contacted at [email protected]">[email protected] or by calling 01752 664945.
