CALLINGTON Community College has been designated a specialist Music College by the DfES. The new specialist status is for the next two years and brings the college an extra £65,000 a year. Callington Community College was the first specialist Music College in the South West of England and the only Sports and Music College in the country. The college is already operating under its new specialism although the official launch day is on Tuesday, March 15 when Julian Lloyd Webber will give a daytime public Cello Masterclass with four young cellists from Cornwall and Devon from 2pm until 3pm. There will also be a pipes workshop with Celtic Piper and Samba and African Drumming workshops throughout the day for students at the college. The college achived this new status due to the outstanding work of its music department. The college has nearly 300 students engaged in additional musical instrument tuition, and is the only school in the area offering A level music and A level Music Technology. As part of the college's bid for specialist status, it will be working in partnership with primary schools to maximise the musical opportunities for all youngsters in the community at the earliest possible age. Also, an element is developing Music ICT skills within the curriculum to broaden the appeal of music-making in the modern culture. On-going activities such as the Callington Music and Murals Project and the annual Callington Youth Music Festival will be further developed but there are plans for a community Wind Band day, a song writers' day and a Celtic music day.
