Liskeard has won a bid to host a Cornish Christmas staged by the team behind the huge Man Engine celebrations last summer.

Liskeard was one of 13 towns across Cornwall that expressed an interest in the Golden Tree Productions idea.

Now the town council and Golden Tree will work together to stage Nadelik Lyskerrys – Christmas in Liskeard – over the weekend of Liskeard Lights Up.

All the events will have the Cornish language at their core.

‘There will be drop-in Cornish language sessions including workshops for staff and pupils at local schools,’ said a spokesperson for Golden Tree.

‘We will be working with local artists and businesses to create Cornish-inspired decorations and lanterns, carol singing, music, food and more.

‘We want to create an inclusive, big-hearted and welcoming celebration of everything that makes Cornwall so unique and special.’

A residential event will welcome Cornish speakers to Liskeard during the weekend of the lantern parade – and there will be a ‘Cornish Feast’ as part of the celebrations.

Having worked with the town council during the Man Engine tour of July 2016, Golden Tree said they were impressed by the town’s ‘energy and enthusiasm’ for putting on community events.

Golden Tree Productions has been awarded an annual £50,000 contract from Cornwall Council to deliver Cornish language through cultural and educational projects – Nadelik Lyskerrys is one of these.
