Couple celebrate
diamond wedding
George and Peggy Matthews of Menheniot, began their diamond wedding celebrations on Easter Sunday, with lunch with friends and family in the village's Methodist Church after the morning service.
George and Peggy met when they were 17 and 20 after George caught a glimpse of his future wife visiting a post office he was working at.
Peggy said: 'A friend of mine from church, who worked with George, came up to me later in the week to tell me that he would be coming to church especially to meet me.'
The couple have two daughters, Anne and Jane, grandchildren, Richard, Susan, Clerk and Kirk, and great-grandchildren, Roger, Grace, Katherine, Jason and Rebecca. Their son, David, born in 1946, died when he was 22.
In 1940 George joined the Royal Navy and spent much of the war in the Mediterranean before retiring as lieutenant commander in 1954.
The couple lived near Bournemouth, working as wardens at the local Girl Guide Camp before moving to Menheniot four years ago.
'We have had a wonderful welcome here in Menheniot,' said Peggy.
The couple, who married on April 4, 1942, were delighted to receive their card of congratulations from the Queen. A further anniversary surprise is in store this Saturday.
'I don't know what to expect really,' said Peggy, 'it's being kept very quiet!'

Saintly meal
Stuart House Trust members enjoyed an eventful week, with a talk on William Morris and a rather novel Supper Club meal.
Members of the Supper Club, Kate Trent and Brenda Moore, created a menu to acknowledge three saints days. Soon to be the club's first junior members, Ellie and Daley, looked after the dining members admirably.
Stuart House filled again when Christine Woolfe treated members to a talk on William Morris.
Sisterhood
Liskeard Sisterhood gathered for their Easter meeting at the Methodist Church. The meeting, on a lovely warm spring day, was presided over by Mrs Win Hoskin. The table arrangement depicted the Easter message.
The Rev Christopher Newell gave a talk and sang two songs. He was thanked by Win Hoskin. Easter Hymns were sung with the pianist being Mrs Margaret Platt.
The previous week was a members afternoon presided over by Mrs Margaret Pemberton. Next meeting is on April 9.
