School celebrates

prestigious award

LISKEARD Junior School, which is raising standards by raising expectations, is celebrating after being recognised as an Investor in People.

The school, which was supported through the process of gaining the prestigious award by the Learning and Skills Council of Devon and Cornwall, has invested in the development needs of its staff to create what the award has described as 'an exceptional centre for learning'. It said that this is further bolstered by a shared vision among all staff for the academic and social development of the school's 320 pupils.

'We are delighted to be recognised as an Investor in People,' said head teacher Martin Clark. 'Through the programme we have introduced a new team leadership structure and process to meet the needs of our staff. This has provided them with the time, support and encouragement needed to help our pupils reach their potential.'

In recommending Liskeard Junior School for the award, assessor Hilary Bryant said: 'Teamwork at the school is nothing short of outstanding with each member of staff committed to the well being of each other and the school itself. Individuals feel valued and supported within their roles and feel justifiably proud of the school's achievement.' She added that there is a strong and dedicated staff who are committed to improvement and personal/professional development whatever their role. She said teamwork is a particular strength with planning resources being shared and with a free flow of information between colleagues in different roles.

The school opened on its new site in Old Road in 1998, and enjoys access to quality sports facilities, and a conservation area which is also enjoyed by the local community. It has 32 members of staff and there is a significant history of promotion of staff from the school, including two headships, a lecturer in higher education, a numeracy consultant and a music project leader.

The Investor in People recognition comes hard on the heels of the school being awarded the Silver Artsmark for the excellence of its arts work.

Anti-shoplifting scheme

LISKEARD Chamber of Commerce is extending a warm welcome to all interested non-members as well as members to join an open meeting at the Lord Eliot Hotel on Monday next, March 25, at 7pm, when there will be information and discussion about the 'anti-shoplifting scheme'.

Representatives from the police will also be present to answer questions.

The normal monthly chamber meeting follows at approximately 7.30pm to which everyone is also invited to stay if they so wish.

The Liskeard Chamber is now flourishing with a membership of 142, but the committee are keen to point out that it is not just an organisation for shop keepers.

Only 50 retailers are currently involved with the chamber, with other members coming from other forms of businesses.

New members are always welcomed and enquiries will be welcome on the night.
