£500 for

student

JAMES Nash, a student from Liskeard College, has been awarded a Career Challenge Bursary of £500, organised by Connexions Cornwall and Devon.

The money will be used to experiment with career ideas by undertaking work experience.

Students had to organise a business and career plan displaying ideas that linked to the area of work that they hope to go into.

With the help of their Connexions personal advisers, tutors and youth workers, they will be using their experiences to look at long-term goals.

Elizabeth Filmer, careers team leader from Connexion Cornwall and Devon said: 'The ideas put forward for work experience placements were all horizon-broadening and there was great competition for bursaries.'

James plans to carry out his work experience at Birmingham New Street Station where he will be shadowing railway staff.

James, who is currently studying for his AS Levels, has always had an interest in railway stations.

He said: 'I am interested in the way the rail system works - I think the railway shapes the way the country works.

'I am looking forward to comparing a larger railway station to others that I have had experience within.'

The Career Challenge competition is now in its sixth year, offering students home-based as well as worldwide locations in a variety of jobs.

Karaoke

challenge

A BUMPER karaoke competition is to be run in Liskeard's Carlton Suite from March 21 - when the first of nine heats before a grand final will be held.

The overall winner, to be chosen in December, stands to take home £1,000 for their performance. Entry is for those aged 16 and over with no professionals to take part.

Application forms for the Karaoke Challenge are to be available from the Royal Cafe on The Parade, Liskeard News and the Carlton Suite itself.

The competition will be taking place in a newly-redecorated and revamped Carlton Suite, with television screens allowing the audience to sing-a-long with the contestants.
