Good marks for school

PUPILS who enter Liskeard School and Community College with slightly below average standards overall gain above average standards by the end of year 11, according to Ofsted inspectors.

The inspectors concluded that overall it is a good school with teaching mainly good at each stage of education. The school was also said to be well led, with much accomplished since the last inspection, and overall offering good value for money - both in the main school and the sixth form.

Under items the school 'does well' in were pupils' personal development, target-setting for pupils, very good leadership from head teacher Alan Sedgley, a good sixth form curriculum, and the subject expertise of the staff. Under areas for improvement were the need for higher standards and achievement in information and communication technology from years 7-11, shortcomings in the balance of time between subjects in the curriculum in years 7-11, better management of provision for pupils with special educational needs, and improvement in provision of design and technology and in key skills work in information and communication technology for lower attaining sixth formers.
