Take a walk on the health side

LISKEARD residents can take part in Walking for Health, an event to improve local health with a series of walks in and around the town.

Organised by Liskeard Community Health and Information Network (CHAIN) and Caradon council, Walking for Health runs from 11am to 1pm on August 29 and includes a choice of three walks ranging from a five minute stroll around Westbourne Park to a half hour town trail and a more challenging 40 minute walk through country lanes.

Liz Webb, community health development worker, said: 'Walking is a great form of exercise for everyone. It's free, social and doesn't require special equipment. It can also have a very positive impact on both physical and mental health.'

The day will feature the launch of a guide to six different Liskeard walks compiled by Chris Ferguson. Copies will be available at the event and from the town clerk afterwards, and CHAIN is hoping that the guide and the Walking for Health event will encourage people to start their own local walking group.

Caradon councillor, Sid Gardner, said: 'We hope as many people as possible will take part on the day.

'The Westbourne Park walk is suitable for everyone from the youngest to the oldest participants.'

Anyone interested in taking part should arrive at Westbourne Park by 11am on August 29.

Participants should wear comfortable clothes and shoes and are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy in the park afterwards.

Age Concern will be on hand with tea, coffee and squash, and walkers will be able to enjoy the gardens of Westbourne House after their travels.

Class of '87 stage school reunion

A re-union of Liskeard Comprehensive School students who attended the school in 1987 is being arranged for October 6, 2001. The event will be held at the Lord Eliot Hotel in the town from 8pm until midnight. For tickets and more information contact K Bray on 01566 777405.

Hive of activity – and all for charity

THE house and gardens of Christine and Norman Pampling, in Liskeard, have been a hive of activity during the summer, with various charities making money for their cause.

On July 6 the woman's section of the Royal British Legion served cream teas, and on the following day Children's Hospice South West held a coffee morning.

On July 14 Christine had a sale of second hand toys which had been donated, and which she sold to raise funds for the Liskeard Looe Inner Wheel of which she is president.

July 28 saw many local charities arrive for a table top sale in aid of their own charity, while in the evening the Liskeard drama group arrived to hold their second annual barbecue.

On August 10 the Liskeard branch of the British Red Cross held their annual coffee morning, raising £93.37, while on August 21 the woman's section of the RBL arrived again for a Ploughman's lunch.

On August 28 Liskeard-Looe Inner Wheel will be holding cream teas.

As Christine's charity for the year is the local branch of St John Ambulance she is hoping for good support.

Also planned is a chain of coins in Fore Street for St John.

New date for charity fun day

BAD weather led to the postponement of a Charity fun day which Great Trethew Manor were aiming to hold on Saturday for Lamellion and Passmore Edwards hospital.

Instead the fun day is to be held on Sunday August 26, with the aim of helping purchase a hoist for the hospital, to benefit the older patients.

This costs in the region of £2,000.

There have been so many donations from local shops and theme parks (meat vouchers, meal vouchers, bottles, toys, Flambards, Bens Play World, Eden Project etc) that organisers feel it would be a waste not to have a good turn-out on Sunday.

A wide range of activities has been planned with a charity auction and prize draw in the evening at 7.30pm.

The activities, which start at 2.30pm, include go-karting, a car boot sale, a bouncy castle, a barbecue, a 4x4 off road course, face painting, a balloonist, mini quad bikes, a magician and music etc.
