Duo of burgesses

for Liskeard

TWO new 'Honoured Burgesses' for Liskeard were created during the town's mayor-making ceremony last week - Tony Wood and Norman Pampling.

Mr Wood, one of three trustees of the Stuart House Trust, moved to Liskeard in l977 to become head of the Grammar School and then the Comprehensive School, retiring in l996. As Stuart House trustee and vice-chairman and chairman he cleared the garden site and helped create a l7th century garden, and also applied for and progressed funding for the house. Such enthusiasm has now seen the House restored, and he frequently attends meetings to talk on its history.

Mr Wood is also a St Martin's church sidesman, and chair of the re-roofing project for which he is planning a pageant and related events this summer. It was his idea to mark the town centre and entrances to Liskeard with granite Celtic crosses, this adopted by the town's Millennium committee. Other community work includes being a member of Liskeard in Bloom and playing a leading role in organising the 'Liskeard Churches Together' Millennium show 'Countdown' last year.

Mr Pampling was mayor of Liskeard on four occasions, the last being l992-93. He was a founder member of the Liskeard/Quimperle twinning association, a councillor for 25 years and deputy mayor three times. He has been a member of the Royal British Legion since l952 and is life president of the Trevillis League of Friends. President of the Liskerret male voice choir, which he formed whilst mayor, he is also vice president of Liskeard silver band, a member of the Liskeard Operatic Society and Drama group and Liskeard/Looe Rotary, and founder member of Mount Edgcumbe Hospice fund-raising in Liskeard.
